A Listable...Tips for Parents at Home in Math and Reading

I taught for years in Title 1 schools, where it was sometimes hard to get parents involved with their kid's education. I truly believe it's not because they didn't want to help their child...I believe it's because they didn't quite know how. Let's face it....school is much different than 20 or 30 years ago.

So I have created a listable of tips for sharing with your parents. I like to pass these out at parent conferences.

I heard so many times from my students that they didn't read because "we had to visit my grandma in the hospital", "I had soccer practice", "I didn't have time". Parents HAVE to know how invaluable reading is. There is just nothing that compares to reading every day.

This visual is wonderful to share with parents. I don't know about you, but I'm a total visual learner and understand things SO much better when I see it all laid out. I love a good game. And using games in reading? BONUS! Jodie from Growing Book by Book has 4 fun reading games that parents can play with their child. And what's great is that they use a muffin tin, which you can get at the dollar store!

Selfies are the rage nowadays, so why not use this with your parents? Math Teachers are Hip shares this fantabulous and hilarious way to solve math problems. I think it's a great way to show parents that math problems are not one-step problems. They involve critical thinking, sometimes guessing and checking, persevering, and explaining.

Looking for some math printables for your parents to use at home? Growing Smart Kids has several free math printables for you to print out for your parents or for you to share the site with your parents so they can print them out.

Some of the printables included: fraction strips, number lines, hundreds chart, number cards, tangrams, place value mat, and more.
